Director and Montessori teacher, Gráinne Whelan Bellotti was one of PRMS’s very first students! Her mother Teresa was trained in the Montessori philosophy in Europe, attending lectures by Mario Montessori, Maria's son! Teresa Whelan immigrated to the US from Ireland in 1965 to open a Montessori School for the Dupont Company in Delaware. After marrying her husband Cahal, also from Ireland, and falling in love with Pound Ridge, they opened PRMS in the fall of 1969.
Born and raised in Pound Ridge, NY, Gráinne is proud to continue her mother’s legacy and strives to make PRMS the very best first school experience for young learners. She is passionate about art and received her BFA from Cornell University. After college she traveled the world…teaching skiing in Switzerland and English in Japan. Gráinne’s love of teaching grew from her experiences working and traveling abroad. She received her Certification in Art Education at University College Cork in Ireland and then her Master’s in Education from Manhattanville College in NY. She taught art history, photography and drawing at the high school level before deciding to get her Montessori certification and return to PRMS to teach. She was fortunate enough to work along-side her mother at PRMS until 2014 when her mother retired. Her three children, now 21, 19 and 14, all attended PRMS.
