​Children enter our school and immediately feel welcome.  The classroom is carefully presented to allow for freedom of flow, small group learning, and individual mastery of each lesson and each piece of material.
​Our classroom has different areas for the children to choose from; ​Practical Life, Sensorial, Math, Language, Science, Geography and Art.
​Our Children's House program is directed toward children who are three to five years of age. Children work at their own pace and at their own level in our multi-age classroom. The multi-age grouping benefits children in many ways. Children of differing education levels, abilities, and ages are grouped together and taught to learn from one another. Younger children begin to emulate the older children's attitudes and behavior, and older children learn about caring and mentoring their younger classmates. ​
​​This classroom has a 7:1 student teacher ratio.​​ All students must be to be up to date on all NY state required vaccinations.

Our Teachers

Our teachers prepare the classroom, give lessons to students, and offer students encouragement as needed. It is the individual child who tries and triumphs, persists and discovers, and motivates oneself to master the multi-sensory activities presented each day.  
 
Pound Ridge Montessori School teachers are American Montessori Society (A.M.S.) certified with many years of experience creating a rich environment, in which we recognize that the only valid impulse to learning is the self motivation of the child.

Outdoor classroom
 
Our picturesque campus, which was a working farm until 1939, is a true extension of the classroom. In addition to time for free play and exploration, we use all aspects of the natural environment to enhance the Montessori curriculum. Our young artists venture outside to paint "The Rock" following a lesson about cave paintings. For Earth Day the children planted and watered seedling trees in the school's woodland. Each spring we incubated eggs in our classroom and watch our little chicks hatch before our eyes!  We also love planting and harvesting our veggie garden.​

Weekly enrichment

In addition to our Montessori program we offer enrichment classes during the day in the following areas:

Weekly lessons introduce students to Spanish through interactive lessons, songs and stories.
Yoga and meditation
Weekly lessons introduce our students to yoga poses through stories that encourage them to use their imagination.
Art Appreciation & History 
Our students love learning about and creating hands on multi media art works inspired by the Masters...Van Gogh, Michelangelo, Matisse...and more!
